Checking a European VAT number (intra-Community VAT number)
How do you quickly and easily check the validity of a VAT number?
To do this,
use the application VIES of the European Commission. The check is carried out immediately and you can print or download the certificate.
For some Member States, VIES does not allow linking a VAT number to a name or address. If required, you can apply for this information in MyMinfin (or by e-mail or phone).
How to apply for a certificate of validity via MyMinfin?
After logging in, you will be taken to the 'My interactions' page. In 'My applications for certificates', select 'Check validity of a European VAT number'.
You can apply for multiple VAT numbers (either by entering them directly into the screen or by uploading a CSV file). In that case, you will receive a certificate with all the VAT numbers you applied for.
Your certificate will then be available in MyMinfin. If you have enabled notifications in your eBox Enterprise, you will be notified.

Your CSV file should contain 1, 2 or 3 'columns'
- Add the VAT number to be checked in the first column.
- If you want the name of the taxable person to be validated, add it in the second column.
- If you want the address of the taxable person to be validated, add it in the third column.
Points of particular interest
- The separator character that should be used, is the semicolon (;).
- If you are using a spreadsheet, do not add titles to the columns and avoid empty cells in the first column.
