How to digitally sign a pdf?

Make sure you have your electronic identity card (eID) and your PIN code at hand in order to be able to sign.

Important remark: the steps to be followed can be very different in terms of your device and the programmes installed on it.

  1. Open the pdf file and go to a zone in the document where you want to place the signature.
  2. Click on ‘All tools’ at the top left.

  9. Insert your eID into the card reader. Some computers, laptops and keyboards have a built-in card reader. If this is not the case for your device, you can connect a separate eID card reader to your device. Once your eID is detected, a pop-up window will appear. In it, click ‘OK’.

In order to be able to use your eID, you need certain software on your device. In most cases, that software is probably already installed. If not, you will get an error message. You can then download the software to use the eID for free from the Federal Public Service Policy and Support website.

  10. The programme will now ask you to save the document. Therefore, save the document on your PC again.
  11. A pop-up will now appear to enter your PIN code. Enter your PIN code and click the ‘OK’ button.

The document is now digitally signed. In the blue bar at the top, you can check your certificate under ‘Signature Panel’. You can no longer change anything in the document now.
