Most European financial sanctions applying in Belgium belong to the regimes of sanctions imposed by the European Union (EU). The EU not only transposes the sanctions imposed by the Security Council of United Nations into European law, but also strengthens them often by taking additional measures. Besides, the EU also imposes sanctions on its own initiative.

EU regimes of sanctions directly apply in Belgium. They are imposed by means of regulations having direct effect in the national legal system of Member States. The law of May 13th 2003 gives to the King the power to take the necessary measures for the further implementation of restrictive measures adopted by the European Union. The law also provides for sanctions for infractions against the EU regimes of sanctions.
